The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley offers a diverse range of interests and activities to suit people of all abilities and tastes. Bluebells in the Spring, vibrant colours in the Autumn, the geographical area between the Severn and the Wye Rivers is compact are easy to see on foot, a bicycle or the car. There are also excursions on The Wye River from Symonds Yat. At night when the sky is cloudless, Stars are easily visible because of the lack of light pollution.
Railway enthusiasts are catered for on a steam railway running between Lydney and Parkend. There is a good choice of golf courses and different types of fishing for a relaxing day, or you can learn about the local history at the Heritage Museum in Soudley.
There are many species of birds here, also animals up to the size of Deer. More locally within our walled garden we see Slow Worms, Bats, Toads, Hedgehogs and various interesting birds, often Buzzards, circling overhead.
A perfect traffic free environment which enables you to tackle graded, marked routes suitable for all abilities. Whatever you level of experience, enjoy the scenery taking in various lakes and ponds and fortunately you are never far away from a ‘watering hole’ for refreshments. The Family trail is particularly suitable for families, children and those with disabilities.
Disused railway lines have been restored to link up the main towns with the heart of the woodland and the Cycle Centre ‘Pedalabikaway’ is equipped to hire bikes and give you a comprehensive service to bikes.
We are particularly fortunate to be in a central, level, easy to reach location here.
The adjacent Nagshead Nature Reserve offers a choice of trails, all easily accessible from Sawmill Cottage. This Ancient Woodland is a great place to spend time being quiet and observing the various fauna and flora. Cannop Ponds and Mallards Pike Lake are a comfortable mornings circuit walk from here.
The further Sculpture Trail is also easy to walk to for reasonably fit people.
